Plan a useful website

What every South African small-business website should include

A good website answers questions, reduces uncertainty and makes contacting you effortless. Use this checklist before you pay for one.

1. A clear opening statement

Within seconds, visitors should understand what you do, who you help and where you operate. Clever slogans can support this—but should never replace it.

2. Services explained in plain language

List what you actually provide. Explain who each service is for, what problem it solves and what the customer should do next.

3. Visible contact options

Include a working phone or WhatsApp number, email address and enquiry form. Keep the main contact action visible on mobile screens.

4. Trust signals

  • Your real business name and service area
  • A professional email address
  • Authentic photographs or honestly labelled demonstrations
  • Real reviews when available
  • Transparent pricing or a clear quotation process
Never manufacture testimonials or results. New businesses build more trust through honesty than borrowed credibility.

5. Mobile-friendly design

Many customers will visit from a phone, often directly from Facebook or WhatsApp. Buttons must be easy to tap, text easy to read and pages quick to load.

6. Local search information

Your website should clearly state the areas you serve and use page titles that describe your services. A complete Google Business Profile reinforces these signals.

7. Privacy information

If you collect names, numbers or email addresses, explain what the information is used for. Keep forms limited to what you genuinely need.

8. Clear ownership and support

Before launch, confirm who owns the domain, website files and accounts. Understand which updates are included and what future changes will cost.
